physical education to elementary school children. Emphasizes the importance of

motor skill development, the implications of health-related fitness, and
activities that maximize participation for children in vigorous activity
promoting wellness.

Health and Motor Development in Early Childhood

Focuses on social, cognitive, and physical aspects influencing health and motor
development in preschoolers and across the life span. Emphasizes the importance
of the early childhood years for health promotion and positive health
behaviors. Studies the development of fundamental motor patterns (walking,
running, catching, throwing, striking, climbing, etc.) including
perceptual-motor implications. Provides an opportunity to work directly with a
preschooler in a laboratory setting observing and assessing fundamental motor
patterns and health behaviors.

PED 1400
Personal Safety and Self Defense Techniques

Designed to introduce the principles and techniques of personal crime
prevention. Students learn about factors that cause crime and the resources
available to avoid becoming a victim. Students learn personal safety assessment
and strategies to make them a less likely target for criminal activity. Course
examples focus on safety and security on a college campus.
Provides the student with an opportunity for concentrated planning and research
in a topic area of physical education, sport, or dance. Requires student to
submit outline of proposed study.
Attempts to prepare the untrained and inexperienced volunteer to better relate
to young athletes, ages 814. Addresses developing a coaching philosophy,
teaching developmentally appropriate motor skills and strategies to young
athletes, reinforcing youngsters positively, planning practices, safety
implications, and liability concerns. Stresses providing youngsters with an
experience that values sportsmanship and citizenship; teaching young athletes
respect for self and others; keeping unwanted behavior out of the program; and
training athletes first, winning second.
To be added to any course in the program when approved. Once approved, the
adjunct information is forwarded to the honors office for dissemination to the
honors membership. Allows enrollment an unlimited number of times as an adjunct
to any physical education and dance course at different times during a given
academic year.
Dance
Introduces modern dance technique and style.
Continues PED1153, with progression to more complex modern dance techniques and
combinations. Prereq. PED1153 or equivalent.
Continues PED1154, with progression into the expressive and choreographic use
of modern dance techniques. Prereq. PED1154 or equivalent.
Introduces ballet fundamentals, with emphasis on alignment.
Continues PED1156, with emphasis on developing lyrical style. Prereq. PED1156
or equivalent.
Introduces the fundamentals of jazz dance, with emphasis on alignment. A
variety of jazz styles and routines are explored.
Continues techniques introduced in PED1159, with emphasis
on developing jazz dance style. Prereq. PED1159 or equivalent.
Introduces traditional and contemporary partner dancing.
Continues PED1163 with progression into more complex dance steps, partnering
techniques, and amalgamations. Expands upon dances taught in PED1163 and
introduces additional ballroom dances. Prereq. PED1163.

Choreography and Performance 1

Gives students an opportunity to explore the choreographic process and perform
choreography drawn from modern, ballet, and jazz dance repertory. Prereq.
