| Managing Your Search: The How-Tos A job search is like a solo race in which you can envisionthe finish a new job but you dont know when youll get there. You can do all the right things and still not know how far you have to go.. There are few benchmarks, you cant see your competitors and you dont know how youre doing. Like races, job searches take a lot of energy. Tell your friends and relatives what you find helpful and supportive (and not). Take good care of yourself: eat, sleep, exercise. Give yourself reasonable, guilt-free, time off from your search. Regularly do things that reliably create energy even fun. Get help when you need it from friends, family, Career Services. Remember that most people are only "job-finding experts" if they have had a lot of jobs. Set reasonable goals and monitor your progress. Make a system to keep careful records of leads and contacts with dates, sources, notes on conversations, thank-you notes and e-mails; jobs youve applied to;and ideas and possibilities to explore. |
