Portfolio Requirements
Candidates applying for admission to the art and graphic design majors (including animation and photography) are strongly recommended to submit a portfolio.
Candidates applying for admission to the music technology program are required to submit a portfolio for review by a faculty committee.
Art + Design
Your portfolio may include work in a variety of media; no particular subject matter or style is required. Rather, you should select work that best shows your personal style, skills, creativity and commitment to innovation.
Our portfolio requirements have changed. If you have already submitted your portfolios via slides, they are acceptable and will still be reviewed.
Applicants for the Art, Digital Art and Graphic Design majors in the Department of Art + Design are recommended, but not required to submit a portfolio. Applicants without portfolios may be accepted into the department as probationary art majors. Final acceptance into the art or graphic design majors (including animation and photography) is dependent upon a review of the applicant's grades and a portfolio created during the freshman year. Students will be aided in the development of this portfolio through first-year course work. Students applying without a portfolio will otherwise be considered for admission to the department using the same admission criteria as applicants with a portfolio.
Applicants for the Studio Art major (in collaboration with the School of the Museum of Fine Arts) must submit a portfolio in order to be considered for the admission.
For further information about portfolio development, please contact the Department of Art + Design in the College of Arts and Sciences at (617)-373-2347.
Music Technology Portfolio
Please send your portfolio to the admissions office, not to the music department. The address is located at the top of this page. Your portfolio for music technology must include the following:
- Three representative examples of your creative work in a form that best represents the project, including lead sheets of original songs or printed scores of original compositions or arrangements; digital format, which might include MIDI or digital audio files on floppy disk, data CD or Zip disks (PC and Mac formats are acceptable); or URLs for Web sites that include original music or sounds. Audio recordings of compositions are highly recommended (audio CD or cassette preferred). Videotape recordings of live performances of your music are also acceptable.
- A short statement explaining your involvement in the creation of the work. The statement should note whether you are the sole creator or a collaborator; the composer, arranger, or remixer; and whether you are performing the work on the recording(s).
- A separate typed one-page statement of your musical background, influences, and goals and exactly how you think the music technology program will be a good fit for your goals.
